In The IPL 2025 Mega Auction, These Five Titans Four Former Captains and One Opener Were not Sold

No one purchased Mayank Agarwal at the IPL mega auction, along with David Warner, Steve Smith, and Kane Williamson. Surprisingly, Prithvi Shaw, the explosive opener, did not sell out.

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia’s two-day IPL mega auction, is over. 182 players were purchased by 10 teams for a total of Rs 639.15 crore. Rishabh Pant became the most costly player in IPL history with a whopping 27 crores. In addition to pant, Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer, Arshdeep Singh, and Yuzvendra Chahal received large sums of money, but many other legends remained unpurchased. Four former IPL captains are among them. Here is a list of five such legends that no team has ever purchased, not even for a single penny.

David warner

David Warner, the captain who led Sunrisers Hyderabad to victory in 2016, was also not sold this time. The starting price for Iyer was Rs 2 crore. He played for Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2014 to 2021 after playing for the Delhi Capitals from 2009 to 2013. In 2022 and 2023, he went back to Delhi, but it appears that the legendary player’s career—which has included four hundred and sixty-two half-centuries—has come to an end.

Kane Williamson

For many years, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s captain was Kane Williamson, a 34-year-old right-handed batsman. In 79 IPL games since joining the Gujarat Titans in 2022, Williamson has amassed 2128 runs and 18 half-centuries. One could argue that the former New Zealand captain’s IPL career came to an end when he was not chosen in the mega auction.

Prithvi Shaw

The fact that Prithvi Shaw, 25, did not sell at this auction is the most unexpected. Everyone is aware of Prithvi’s explosiveness as a batsman. Due to his bad attitude and lack of fitness, Prithvi Shaw was frequently involved in controversy, even after hitting six fours in six balls in a row during an IPL match. With 14 half-centuries and an incredible strike rate of 147.47, Prithvi Shaw has amassed 1892 runs in 79 IPL games.

mayank agarwal

One such former captain who did not sell this time was Mayank Agarwal, who began his IPL career with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2011. From 2018 to 2022, he played for the Punjab Kings after playing for the Delhi Capitals and Rising Pune Supergiant. He also had the opportunity to lead the Punjab Kings for a season during this time. He was added by Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2023 for an enormous sum of Rs 8.25 crore. But he did not sell this time.

Piyush Chawla

Piyush Chawla, a member of the winning 2011 ODI World Cup squad, did not sell at the auction. With a base price of just Rs 50 lakh, the 35-year-old seasoned leg spinner failed to find a buyer. Chawla, who has represented the Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Kings XI Punjab, participated in 192 IPL games and claimed 192 wickets.
