Maintaining the momentum from the Olympics in Paris, the Indian men’s hockey team under Harmanpreet Singh emerged victorious in the Asian Champions Trophy. The game’s hero was Jugraj Singh, who scored the game’s winning goal with nine minutes left on the clock as defending champions India overcame China. Last month, the Indian team competed in the Paris Olympics and came away with a bronze medal. However, they were well prepared for the Asian Champions Medal and won the gold.

China posed a serious threat to India.

In the competition final, China, who was participating for the first time, put up a fierce battle against India. Although the Indian squad had opportunities to score, China’s defence impressed and prevented India from taking the lead. As neither team scored a goal throughout the first three quarters, it appeared like a penalty shootout would be used to determine the winner. But in the 51st minute, Jugraj scored a field goal to give India the lead, and he kept China from tying the score till the very end. Even though skipper Harmanpreet did not score in this game, he did assist Jugraj in doing so.

The fifth time that India went champions,
This tournament’s winner is the Indian team for the fifth time. It is interesting to note that the group has triumphed twice in a row. India’s 2011 victory over Pakistan gave them the inaugural Asian Champions Trophy championship. When it defeated Pakistan in 2016, it also took home this trophy. By defeating Malaysia in the championship game in 2023, the Indian team won the tournament for the fourth time on record. Now, it has done it a record five times. The team from India has had the most success in this competition.

India missed to take advantage of chances to score goals.

The Indian squad, which was a heavy favourite to win, easily trounced China 3-0 in the opening league game, but the championship game was very difficult. China was not far behind India in counterattacks over the first two quarters, despite India having numerous scoring opportunities. The initial attempt was attempted by Rajkumar Pal, but Wang Weihao, the Chinese goalie, stopped it. Harmanpreet Singh was unable to score, but Rajkumar gave India their first penalty corner in the tenth minute. Nilakant Sharma’s attempt was stopped by Wang two minutes later, while Sukhjeet Singh was denied a goal the following minute. India was awarded a penalty corner just before the first quarter, but Krishna Bahadur Pathak was not far from the goal. The narrative remained unchanged in the second quarter as India attempted to control the ball but was unsuccessful.

When India was awarded a penalty corner in the 27th minute, Sukhjeet’s attempt struck the goalpost. The Chinese forward line assaulted relentlessly in the second half and earned a penalty corner in the 38th minute, but the Indian defence stayed vigilant. The Indian goalie Pathak denied a goal during China’s two consecutive penalty corners in the 40th minute. The creator of India’s goal, Harmanpreet, infiltrated the Chinese circle with excellent stick work before passing the ball to Jugraj, who scored the goal with ease.
