Bibek Debroy, Chairman of PM’s Economic Advisory Council, died today at the age of 69. He passed away at 7 am due to intestinal obstruction after being admitted to the emergency room the night before at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.
PM Narendra Modi paid his condolences and posted it on social media X and said that Mr Debroy was a Towering Scholar. It’s because of his contributions significantly impacted India’s Intellectual landscape.
“Dr. Bibek Debroy Ji was a towering scholar, well-versed in diverse domains like economics, history, culture, politics, spirituality and more. Through his works, he left an indelible mark on India’s intellectual landscape. Beyond his contributions to public policy, he enjoyed working on our ancient texts, making them accessible to the youth,” PM Modi said on X.

- Bibek Debroy had a distinguished career as an economist and academic and served as a Reader (Associate Professor) in Economics at the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics from 1983 to 1987.
- He was also Director of the Rajiv Gandhi Institute for Contemporary Studies.
- Consultant to the Department of Economic Affairs of the Finance Ministry Goverment of India.
- Member of the NITI Aayog from its inception in January 2015 until June 2019.
- A Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister since September 2017.
