Jay Shah will be the next Chairman of the International Cricket Council. He was elected unopposed to this post on Tuesday, 27 August. 35-year-old Shah, who has been playing the role of BCCI secretary since 2019, will take over this responsibility from 62-year-old Greg Barclay on December 1.
Board of Control for Cricket in India Secretary Jay Shah has been elected as the new International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman. Newly-elected chairman Jay Shah said on Tuesday that during his tenure he will ensure that Test cricket becomes the ‘foundation’ of the game. During this time, he will also try to remove the obstacles hindering the progress of cricket’.
35-year-old Shah, who has been playing the role of BCCI secretary since 2019, will take over the responsibility from 62-year-old Greg Barclay on December 1. He will be the youngest Chairman of the ICC. New Zealand’s Barclay decided not to contest for the third consecutive term of two years.
In a statement issued by the BCCI, Shah said, “T20 is naturally an exciting format, but it is equally important that Test cricket remains a priority for everyone. It is the basis of our game. “We must ensure that cricketers are attracted to the longer format, and our efforts will be focused towards this goal.”Shah said, “I would like to work towards setting up a separate program for talent search during my tenure. “I hope for your support in this program.”
Shah stressed raising the standards of the game across the world. He said, “I express my heartfelt gratitude to the ICC member boards who have placed their trust in me to assume this prestigious role of ICC President. I want to assure you that I will make every effort to raise the standard of our game across the world.
